Next, he proposes that one would pee away the calories when they stop eating carbohydrates and this process is known is ketosis.
Whether is that the truth?
However, studies have shown that these Dr Atkins's 2 hypotheses are questionable. There was a study on 2 identical twins on 2 different diet, one on Atkins diet, the other on traditional low fat diet. It was found out that the twin on the Atkins diet only lose a small amount of calories compared to the twin on the low fat diet. And the urine of both the twins show not much of significant results to prove anything. It was concluded that from this study, Dr Atkins hypotheses does not seem to be very true.
So what really work?
Many articles out in the web had concluded that the main reason why it can help one to lose weight is because a high protein diet would act as an appetite suppressant. And by following the Atkins diet, one who feel full easily after eating a meal with high protein and in the end, they eat lesser calories than usual. In addition, scientists have also found out that eating fatty food actually stimulate the appetite.
What is the adverse effect of having too much proteins?
Researchers at Brisham and Women's hospital have found out that a diet with too much proteins and low carbohydrates may cause reduce kidney functions. Atkins diet, being a high protein diet, would require the kidney to work harder to process the excessive proteins. Hence it may affect the kidney functions as a result.
Hence in conclusion, Atkins diet may be an effective diet towards weight loss, however, it may cause adverse effects to your kidney in the long term. The long term effects of Atkins diet is not known yet.
